To Know Jehovah (YHWH)

Part 6 of the series "To Know Him"

It is a name so sacred that most often Jews refused to pronounce it lest they fear that they would pollute the name.  In transcription, the Jews when having to copy the name would remove their clothes, take a bath, put on clean garments and use a new unused pen to write this most Holy Name.  It is revered.  It is holy. At the very mention of YHWH, one can find a true revealing of God’s character.  He is Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.  He is self-existent.  Before time was, He was.  When time is no more, He will always be.  By Him all things were made. In Him is life, light, and love.  Darkness flees in His presence.  Death trembles at the very mention of His name.  It was Jehovah who grieved at the sinfulness of man that he so lovingly created that he purposed to destroy it but chose to continue its existence in the life of one man and his family.   And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.  Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.  So the LORD said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD (Genesis 6:3-8).   Even the demons recognize the sacredness and the holiness, that they abandon their agenda at the very sound of His voice.  Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God! But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. (Luke 4:33-35)  How soon we forget the holiness of God.  Too often we focus on the love of God that we tread a treacherous path on the brink of discrediting Holiness.  His name is a name that deserves our praise.  It deserves our adoration.  It deserves our highest form of worship and we must garner our utmost respect service for His glory.  We must be motivated to treat this name with such reverence with our actions, our attitude, and our articulation.  At the mere mention of Jehovah, God is.  Whatever His word reveals to us, He is.  And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14).  One of the most dynamic truth that can be pointed about God and the usage of Jehovah is this:  Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God (Leviticus 20:7).  We see His requirement to be holy.  We see the realization that He is holy.  But the part I like about this verse is found in the word “your”.  Our all-powerful, all-knowing, supreme, finite, holy God is mine and yours.  He is personal.  Revere Him.  Worship Him.  Adore Him.  Obey Him.  Most of all, have a relationship with Him by knowing Him and how He reveals Himself to you through His holy word.  May we know Him where our hearts become lifted in song at the very mention of His name and in the grace of His presence.  May our relationship be much like the words written by Cathy Goddard: "

In and out of situations
that tug of war at me
All day long I struggle
for the answers that I need
But when I come into His presence
All my questions become clear
And in that sacred moment
No doubts can interfere
In the presence of Jehovah
God Almighty, Prince of Peace
Troubles vanish, hearts are mended
In the presence of the King
