To Know El-Elyon

Part 3 of the series "To Know Him"

One of my favorite animals in the mentioned in the Bible is the eagle.  My favorite fact about eagles is the eagle’s ability to soar.  When a storm brews on the horizon, the eagle is the only bird with the ability to put its wings in a fixed position allowing it to soar for long periods of time without exerting much strength.  The eagle would use the winds of the storm to carry itself to a higher plane.  The eagle during the storm would actually soar above the storms.  Our God is higher than the eagles.  Satan’s mistake was thinking that he could overthrow God.  “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:14).  Creation cannot overthrow the Creator.  Here is one of the instances where the Hebrew word “Elyon” is used.  In the verse translation it denoted by the words Most High.  That is exactly what it translates to.  God is the highest.  He is Supreme.  Picture a stack of blocks, one on top of another.  God is the top block.  His throne exceeds all others.  His sovereignty is superior to the earthly sovereignty of man’s kings.  His name is above all names.  He is above our problems.  No problem can consume him nor can any storm overwhelm him.  He is the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords.  He is the strongest of the strong.  Our worship should reflect that and our humility should recognize that.  We can trust Him knowing that He is above life’s greatest trials and circumstances.  He’s so high, that even a rocky tomb could not contain Him.  Though they nailed Him to the cross, He reigns.  When the world seems ready to envelop you and you feel crushed under the weight of its burdens, God still reigns and is ready to take those burdens off of your shoulders and welcome your weary soul into His open arms.  This truth should bring great comfort to us to know that no matter what life throws in our direction, God still reigns.  He is still the most High God.  Voltaire once boasted that the Bible would soon cease to exist, but within 50 years after his death, the same printing presses used to publish his atheistic work were being used to print Bibles.  His word shall never fail, because they are words from a most High God.  Whatever occurs in life is not unknown to God.  The same God whose high sovereignty ruled in the world of the Old Testament is still that same God today.  One of our greatest assurances is that the most High God knows us.  He does not know of us, but he knows us on a personal level.  He knows the very hairs on your head.  He knows where you are, where you have been, and what you are going through.  Before He made you, He knew you. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5).  In all of His sovereignty, God still desires to have a personal relationship with you.  Isn’t that exciting?  Doesn’t that just thrill your soul?  Okay, now comes the tough part?  Is He high in your life?  Where is He in your priorities?  Can we honestly say that we have been faithful and obedient to the first of the Ten Commandments?  You shall have no other gods before Me (Exodus 20:3).  Is He above your job?  Is He above your hobbies?  Is He above your relationships?  If we are to love Him with all of our heart and soul, then He must and should be our highest priority.  Even the forces of evil know that great truth.  You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! (James 2:19)  Hold on to the Most High God.  Trust in Him.  Rely upon Him.  Root your faith into His sovereignty.  Lord, may you be the highest importance in my life and may I trust in your sovereignty to guide me for the rest of my days.  When the world as we know it vanquishes from existence, the Sovereign God, our Creator, will find His most vilest enemy at His feet on shamefully on bended knees.  From this very root of evil shall these words be uttered, “You are Lord”.  Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11).  It will be then when he shall taste his final defeat to bother us no more.  His sovereignty ensures our victory.
