To Know Him - Introduction

 Part 1 in a series

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15).  That is the commandment Jesus gave to His disciples after His resurrection, all of them.  That includes us.  If we are to share with others who God is, what He has done, the promises He has made, then we must first know Him on a personal level.  To do that, me must make an effort to spend time in the Scriptures.  There is something precious about reading the Word of God.  It is an eye-opening revelation that paints an image in our mind of who God is.  The more we read, the more God is revealed.  Within the words, is an ever-increasing knowledge of who God is.  In the first chapter of Genesis, where He is revealed as the Creator to the last chapter of Revelation where He is reveal as the final judge and ruler, God has left us an instrument in which we can know Him on a personal level.  The knowledge of God falls under three levels.  You either don’t know Him, You know of Him, You know Him.  Many people say they know Him, but the unfortunate reality is they only know of Him.  To know God is more than just a mere acquaintance of God, it is a deeper relationship of reverence, praise, obedience, gratitude, and worship.  To know God is to be convinced of His word and His promises to us.  For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day (II Timothy 1:12).  To know Him is to know more true spiritual freedom.  He is Truth and He is also Faithful and True.  To know Him is to know of His power which exceeds far beyond the reaches of creation and for creation.  To know Him is to know His holiness and His love.  Both of them are together and should never be separated.  Holiness demanded the payment of sin, while love provided it.  To know Him is to know love and have the strength to show that love in this world. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love (I John 4:7-8).  To know Him is to not question His way or His means but to simply trust His wisdom and to allow Him to work in us and to guide us through life.  No matter how many times you read through His word, each time reveals a little more about who God is.  One of the ways to get a picture of who God is to is to know the names of God as revealed in His word and to cherish them.  The Scripture’s revealing of God’s names places in our minds and hearts brushstrokes of a beautiful image of who God is to us.  That image becomes personal and we can share that image with others around us who is in need of knowing who God is. To know Him is to have a relationship with Him.  Over the next several days, as we take a look at the names of God, pray that in your own personal life that you will cultivate a better understanding of who God is and that by the grace of God you will also develop a deeper relationship with Him.
